in all seriousness, its a good lifestyle to lead if you truly believe in it and aren't holier than thou about it, but in recent years, its a shitty trend that undermines people that have legit reasons for being edge
I hate the idea of straight edge. Not doing drugs is cool, I can respect the choice, but who the FUCK defines them self on what they AREN'T? How empty and purposeless can a person be?
who the FUCK defines them self on what they AREN'T?
Isn't being drug free being something?
No.
Sure it is... being drug free is probably a more active decision for some people than doing drugs is for others. It just depends on how much you give a fuck. Not everyone who's drug free is gonna take part in straight edge subculture, not everyone who drinks is gonna go to school to be a bar tender, not everyone who smokes pot is going to subscribe to High Times.
Not that I'm trying to defend the people in this video particularly (I didn't even watch much of it), but they're obviously doing something.

See, this is the same re-hashed argument to go with the same re-hashed straightedge doc.
Here's my thing. Let's assume for arguments sake that straightedge still exists and is relevant in 2009 (it doesn't, but shhh). How many times are we going to see the same fucking straightedge documentary. Great, we're making a straightedge doc. First thing's first, let's stop at Ian McKaye's house and see what he has to say about it. Probably the same thing he always does. "Blah blah blah I'm better than everyone." Let's go get Karl Earth Crisis... he's not a laughing stock. How many faces from how many cliche bands that gave up on straightegde in one way or another can we put together to tell the same stupid story that wasn't really true the first 200x we heard it.
OH, but this time let's get a couple of film school knobs together to think tank this one, maybe do some black and white shots with some Godspeed you Black Emperor sounding soundtrack to make it seem uber serious, and see how much cash we can put in their pockets for picking up on straightedge about 20 years too late.
When somebody comes knocking on my door to interview me about straightedge then I'll call it legit. Until then screw.
how could there possibly be a documentary longer than like 19 minutes on this subject?
I used to be 'straight edge' but never actually CLAIMED edge. I just didnt drink or do drugs until i was about 19 because i didnt want to. I didnt think my decisions and feelings warranted picking up some kind of banner that set me apart from anyone else who did a couple of things that I didnt do. If thats your thing, then cool. But a documentary? Come on. On top of that, they make people who partake in drugs and alcohol out to look like a lot of junkies. I drink once...maybe twice a week. Same thing with smokin.' I'm far from a junkie. This is why I never claimed edge.

Exactly. Let me see if I can guess the outline of this doc.
Intro: Straightedge is this phenomenon in today's youth in a world that's obsessed with drinking drugs, etc, etc dragged on for a few minutes.
Flash back to 1982 when Ian McKaye pioneered his way to the new world to found straightedge and give hope to generations to come (no mention of the fact that he gave up on it before episodes of Martin were even in syndication)
A bunch of super flowery blowjob narrative on how straightedge is the perfect alternative for kids who want to rebel against rebeling. Hooray!
WAIT! CONFLICT! Show the same 20/20 footage everyone has seen 100x over of militant straightedge kids beating up frat kids because Earth Crisis tacitly told them to.
More blowjob narrative on how that's not really what it's all about.
Then we bring it to 2009 where straightedge is still alive and well (hahaha!). B roll some stage dive footage, and tell the viewers to make up their own mind of the 10th wonder of the world: Straightedge.
what losers they are so afraid of becoming dependent that they think all people who drink or do drugs end up on the street and beating their girlfriends...
I drink once a week, don't see me losing my job, or going to jail.

Lose your job and beat your girlfriend OR YOU'RE A PUSSY
I'm straightedge because i just accepted that I'm a pussy

I wanna start a crazy movement called moderation edge. It says you can drink, smoke, do drugs, whatever, but.........this is the part so radical and groundbreaking.......you actually have to use your brain to choose moderate use, personal responsiblity and weight the pros and cons of your decisions. I've never heard of that because everyone is obviously either xx sober sallycore xx or shooting up in the bathroom daily.

Don't know how you did it, but you actually came up with something more boring than Straightedge.
No, never, I live my life under a rock.
But yeah, listen to what the guy says in that video. How does one lace dust WITH Marijuana? Isn't it the other way around?

Pfft, a decent hour, 2:30 AM. I stayed up til 4 drinking and playing guitar, and woke up at 7 to be in work. Responsibility is my middle name. It's on later, friend.

Yeah call me tonight if you still want to hang. I ain't doing shit tonight so lets drink beer, smoke, play KI and watch fucked up movies. I just got the first volume of Ren and Stimpy the lost episodes last night. Fuck man, 4am? How the hell did you get to work this morning. I was fucking struggling to get up after going to bed at 1:30am and I only had three beers last night.
Well, that's a legitimate question. Being the antithesis of straightedge, I guess I learned early on to adapt to this type of behavior. Also, I like making money.
I'll give you a call around 6 or so. If you don't have it, I'm thinking about bringing over the Khanate dvd. Anti party Friday.
