they figured no one would mind if they dumbed down the translation for the dvd release. THEY WERE WRONG! now i gotta buy it again when they re-release it with the proper theatrical subtitles. totally f'ed in the a. totally gonna buy it again FTW!

OR

with the vagina looking as butchered and misshaped as it was, did she used to be a boy and got the chop? and maybe she was at such a young age she's still at the androgynous stage?

i think its left to the viewer to decide. i see it as, she used to be a boy, but got sick of it after so many years alive, so she did the chop. but oskar doesnt care cuz the friendship is so strong.

I could be wrong but i interpreted it to mean that since she was a vampire that it was kind of useless to think of her in those terms
