Here are my top twenty for the year. They are not specifically in order. It was hard to thin it down to twenty, and I could picture it changing if it did it a week later or earlier, but I felt like putting this together. This is mostly due to other peoples suggestions from Slag's thread. For example, I enjoyed everything on Kevord's list, and with more time, more of those would end up on my list.

Anyone who is interested should also look at Autothrall's list on From the Dustbin Returned.

And Conversationist's list

Midnight - Satanic Royalty

Midnight never really thrilled me before. I saw them with Nunslaughter and they were pretty good live, but I never really got into them. Kevord had this at the top of the list and it surprised the hell out of me.

This is black thrash speed with a vibe that I haven't gotten since early venom.

Leviathan - True Traitor True Whore

I don't know too much about the assault charges and the story with his ex girlfriend, but it apparently resulted in this. I've ignored Leviathan for the last few years, but Wrest being unhinged is the secret.

Ash Borer - Self Titled

Really impressive black with drone prehaps "post-"whatever. Black Metal soundscapes are a plus for me.

Autopsy - Macabre Eternal

Autopsy are on top of their game. It is a little cleaner than their other recordings, and people have critiqued it for being long (as in it could be trimmed down to give more of a punch) but I have noticed that people disagree on what the throw away tracks would be. Thoroughly enjoyable to me.

Burzum - Fallen

Just amazing. And this isn't coming from Varg worship. I had this on with a nice pair of headphones while laying on a couch at 2am. The dual guitar work just mesmerized me. The vocals are awesome - the use of the rasp and the spoken voice. Check this out.

Ravencult - Morbid Blood

This is not reinventing the black metal wheel, but it completely rips from beginning to end. Get this

Deceased - Surreal Overdose

After all these years who would have thought a band could still release something this good. I was completely surprised.

Batillus - Furnace

Blackened Doom, but I feel a sludgy vein inside. At first I expected very little from it, but I got hit by the end of the 1st song. The distorted vocals and infections base line hooked me, and I can't shake this buzzoven feeling.

Heresiarch - Hammer of Intransigence

Black Death in that war kult arena with a big Revenge influence with the pick slides and drumming. There is more variety in tempo, and I noticed that some reviews act as if this is a solid brick without variation. I don't see that at all.

Cianide - Gods of Death

Straight up Death Metal that just sounds good. A solid album with a great biting guitar sound. It is not innovating or retro, but I keep going back to it again and again and I think anyone else will too.

Dolorvotre - Dolorvotre

So many people on this board cringe at the Black Twilight Circle, but that tour up here was great. I got to see the Dolovotre lineup in Providence. Keep in mind that I liked the Les Légions Noires scene, and this tape carries the same vibe with the low fi nature contributing to the overall sound.

Necros Christos - Doom of the Occult

More bands should take advantage of soundscapes. There are a ton of intros and instrumentals between the black death tracks to create a solid LP.

Funerary Bell - Circle within Circle

This was different, I'll give it that. Black but really and atmospheric death metal lp, that is heavy on the double bass and in a hypnotic slow to mid gait.

Morbus Chron - Sleepers in the Rift

There are a ton of old shool death metal worshiping bands that have hit lately. Expecially empulating the Swedish sound (Entombed, Dismember, Grave Carnage). Really good stuff too, like Disma and Entrails. I liked Morbus Chron the best. They are slightly different though. Kind of like Repugnant. It has all of the influences of that scene without being an outright imitation.

Vektor - Outer Isolation

Vektor have had a buzz going on for a while, but this is the lP that brings it all together. Sounds great with solid writing, it is crazy future voivod thrash combined with the lead singer of Sadus hitting the high notes. (any old schoolers that have chemical illusions would recognize it right away)

Zygoatsis - Satanic Kultus Unholy Deception

Bestial war kult with a punishing lp. Yeah, I eat this stuff up.

Negative Plane - Stained Glass Revelations

Really haunting guitar work. I definitely recommend giving this a chance. The dark tremolo guitar work has a surfer psychedelic tone to it, but please understand that it totally works. I know that description sounds awful but it makes good Black Metal and its so worth the time

Exhumed - All Guts No Glory

A marriage of Slaughtercult vibe with Anatomy is Destiny production.

Morne - Asylum

This sudgy doom death lp grew on me. It will be perfect for a long midnight drive.

Antichrist - Forbidden World

Last minutle LP that I came across from an Autothrall review. He decribes it as "taking everything I so loved about the early, aggressive thrash from both the Bay Area and German scenes, mashing it up, adding a relish of kinetic, blackened vitriol and then feeding it to me all over again." So true.

Here are others that could easily be in my top 20.

Disma - Toward the Megalist
Mitochondrion - Parasignosis
Vomitory - Opus Mortus VIII
Absu - Abzu
Nekrofilth - Worship Destruction
Blut Aus Nord - 777(sects)
Blood Ceremony - Living with the Ancients
Ulcerate - The Destroyers of All
Sabbat - Sabbatrinity
Rotten Sound - Cursed
Marduk - Iron Dawn
Benighted - Asylum Cave
Gridlink - Orphan
Entrails - the Tomb Awaits
Origin - Entity
Portrait - Crimen Laesae Majestatis Divinae
Blood Ceremony - Living With The Ancients

The last Inquisition would be on here but it actually came out in 2010.
